Joe Weider created the contest in 1965 so that winners of other titles could keep competing instead of retiring once they had won. That idea became the sport's most important stage.

What the Mr. Olympia is
The Mr. Olympia is the highest title in professional bodybuilding. Awarded by the IFBB since 1965, it decides each autumn who counts as the best bodybuilder in the world.
How it is judged
Judges assess not a single muscle but the whole picture of mass, symmetry, definition and presentation, through compulsory poses and a routine, across prejudging and the final.
One division became ten
For a long time there was only the open division. Today ten run in parallel, from Classic Physique through Bikini to Wellness, each with its own criteria.

Progress
Six decades in four steps.
1965–1979: the founding years
Larry Scott wins the first two titles; Sergio Oliva and Arnold Schwarzenegger define the seventies. Arnold takes six consecutive titles up to 1975.
1980–1997: order and dominance
After Arnold's contested comeback in 1980 come the long reigns: eight titles for Lee Haney, then six for Dorian Yates. The stage grows more professional and the athletes heavier.
1998–2017: the mass era
Ronnie Coleman equals Haney's record with eight titles, Jay Cutler interrupts him twice, and Phil Heath wins seven in a row. Meanwhile 212, Figure and Bikini are created.
Since 2018: more open than ever
Seven different names in eight years in the open division. At the same time the field grows: Classic Physique and Wellness draw a new audience.
