What does each method measure, and what does it not?

A fair comparison of bioelectrical impedance, InBody systems and optical 2D body analysis.

Short answer

BIA and 2D analysis answer different questions.

A BIA, for example with an InBody system, measures electrical impedance and estimates body water, fat-free mass and fat mass from it. A 2D body analysis captures outward shape, measurements and posture through standardised photographs. Both are indirect methods. They become most valuable as a series, when device, timing and preparation stay comparable.

Why a single figure is not a diagnosis

BIA does not measure fat or muscle directly. The device records the body's electrical properties and converts them into estimates using models. Research describes meaningful differences between devices, as well as effects from fluid distribution and measuring conditions. So a figure should never be read apart from the trend, the training and the context.

How to make a series comparable

  • use the same device and protocol wherever possible
  • choose a similar time of day and a similar state of food and fluid intake
  • avoid hard exercise immediately before measuring
  • look at several relevant figures, not just body fat percentage
  • combine the measurement with photos, girths, performance data and how you actually feel

Is InBody the same as BIA?

InBody is a brand of device that uses bioelectrical impedance analysis. BIA is the measuring principle, not a particular device.

How accurate is a BIA measurement?

BIA estimates body composition from electrical readings and mathematical models. Individual figures depend on the device, the model and the conditions. Standardised repeat measurements usually say more than a single reading.

What should you bear in mind before an InBody measurement?

Measurements should be taken under conditions that are as comparable as possible, especially time of day, hydration, food intake and recent exercise.
